They're Doing to America What They Did to Christianity

The Trump phenomenon's most illuminating and defining instances – not its most important, nor most brutal, nor most threatening, nor stupidest, but perhaps its most illuminating – occurred earlier this fall. During the period of multiple weeks, the nation's leader began displaying everyone his designs for a lavish reception room twice the size of the White House and subsequently started solo dismantling the eastern section to erect it.

He has performed deeds countless times more severe – the existing assessment of casualties due to his slashing to international aid is 600,000 and growing, and this week an analysis forecast his petroleum strategies would result in fatalities an additional 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No former leader would have risked – really, no other president would have imagined – unilaterally destroying significant portions of the presidential residence to construct a royal-themed celebration hall, with the direct cooperation of some of the richest Americans, nearly all of which have business with federal agencies.

We went from 'the gentle will obtain the planet' to 'the gentle will succumb from cholera'

As disorienting as it is to observe the president seek to颠覆 the established notion about democracy and replace it with its polar opposite, there exists a significant segment within America who might not perceive it completely novel. That encompasses people such as ourselves – in older age cohorts almost a majority – who were raised as conventional Protestant believers.

We have witnessed over the years as politically conservative religious groups turned the Jesus we were raised with into the total contrary of who we understood him to be. Essentially, they transformed an image of compassion into an icon of hate who approves precisely the cruelties that he denounced in scripture; this transformation occurred at a slower pace, through multiple decades as opposed to months, yet it remains disturbing through similar means, a confusing personal impact for many of us.

A Toxic Christianity Takes Hold

Therefore allow me to outline the Savior that I grew up with, since in theory Christ is the focus of Christian religion, and because the quickly increasing segment within America may possess limited understanding of him because they identify as atheists or doubters or nones. I have no problem with any of these traditions, nor with different religions; but I do think that contain precious wisdom of substantial value within Christian narrative.

It is unquestionably not the account of a mighty king arising; instead, a baby is born to parents without shelter in a storage space, who are forced to hastily depart to a different country to evade undercover officers. The child matures in humble circumstances, a laboring woodworker; his teaching is about love for fellow humans, particularly for the poor – and not a sentimental love, but practical compassion, expressed by feeding and housing. Christ's response to hostility is to offer the opposite cheek – not as a demonstration of submissive tolerance, but as a means to educate the attacker; his crime policy is that if someone steals your coat you ought to provide him your sweater too.

The evident and clear fact that the Savior in biblical accounts calls for a form of radical love focused on the poor has consistently rendered Christian religion something of a scandalous religion: attractive to the populace, but owing to its natural unconventionality needing to be controlled. In the 1950s it was contained through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it basically sanctified existing conditions.

A Battle for the Highest Among Us

Hence I have become inspired to witness the steadfast resistance against Trump develop over the last twelve months. It has been substantial consolation to participate in developing the campaign that has demonstrated publicly through repeated demonstrations, and seems to have inspired electorate to show up in large quantities in interim political contests. We will need to persist with it, and with identical determination, featuring US banners throughout each rally and appeals to the highest qualities of American history.

We will be questioned ... regarding how you welcomed the stranger? Did you welcome them and welcome him or refuse?

America is best defended, essentially, by relationship to the best about American history, similar to Christianity is best defended through connection to elements that cause it to be unique and beautiful, particularly the pattern of Christ. In all circumstances does it mean pretending the most damaging regarding America and religious tradition never occurred; it signifies both humility and conviction, a mixture that serious American Christians should be comfortable with.
