The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Reveal a Latest Divinity, Declaring it Their Most Ambitious RPG Ever

The buzz surrounding the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, particularly after host Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The question has been revealed. Larian Studios is working on a fresh Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer featuring intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing suggests that the team could be crafting a real-time experience as opposed to another turn-based title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it pioneered the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for intricate stories, branching plots, and complex character building—elements that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.

Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs only possible with a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also famously open-ended, allowing players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be approached in diverse methods, often in surprising fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can anticipate more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
