Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year Amid Financial Instability

The US central bank cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release when the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are going up, although gradually. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
